Born in Tokyo, bred in New York
Starting out in the mid 90s as a founding member of Japan’s first female reggae sound system, DJ Mihoko toured her home nation extensively, while taking occasional trips to Jamaica to cut dub plates.
Moving to New York City in 1998, Mihoko soon picked up a number of residencies and guest spots at venues such as the Limelight, Speed, Cheetha, Lotus and 60 Thompson. Adapting to New York’s genre spanning club scene, she became well versed in blending a wide variety of musical styles including hip-hop, soul, funk, disco, afro-beat and house, while still drawing heavily on her reggae roots.
Mihoko has since continued to be in demand as an eclectic and soulful selector. Whether spinning downtown club gigs with Q-Tip, appearing on Emskee’s Rare Radio Show on WBAI 99.5 FM, setting the mood at upscale hotel rooftop bars, or simply rocking dance floors at intimate Brooklyn venues, her unique style and willingness to take risks, combined with an informed knowledge of what works, wins over audiences of all kinds every week.
